Community Social Work
The community sector in health care, both in terms of Health
Authorities and non-profit societies, is gaining in importance,
and if the forecasts are to be believed, will continue to do so
for the next few years. This may well mean increased opportunities
for social workers to expand practice into community health care
teams. There are some indications that this is happening. For
example, social workers were appointed within Continuing Care
in the Fraser North Area several years ago, but there have also
been setbacks in some ares where social work jobs, both in hospitals
and community, have been cut.
Social Workers need to be pro-active in promoting the contribution
they can make to community health care, which often offers opportunities
to try creative new directions. There may also be a tendency for
more social workers to be working in isolation, which necessitates
our developing strong connections with our peers and advocating
for support such as clinical supervision, mentoring and ongoing
education in a rapidly changing environment.
