IDEAS FOR SOCIAL WORK WEEK or....

Some of these ideas came up at the SWHSBC AGM and some have been garnered over the years. Some are very simple, others take effort. They can stand alone or several can be combined. Consider what you can handle and go for it!

  • Bring in a guest speaker and invite your colleagues
  • Go out for lunch – its our week after all!
  • Raise your profile: use posters, pictures, remind colleagues how to refer to social work.
  • Small bouquets on the tables in the cafeteria – add best wishes for a happy social work week and/or some positive quotes and sayings (see list below).
  • Ask others to submit quotes about social work or ask what people believe about social work.
  • Give out candy kisses.
  • Have a free draw (If everyone brings a contribution it doesn’t take much to make up an attractive basket. One year I remember two – a healthy stress release basket containing a relaxation tape, bath oil, candles etc.; and an unhealthy one containing chocolates, wine etc. Guess which was the most popular!)
  • Have a quiz. This can be fun but also spreads some useful information if you use the right questions.
  • Make and distribute bookmarks
  • Offer stress reduction at lunchtime – relaxation, yoga, meditation etc.
  • Post a “quote of the day” in a prominent location each day of the week – “courtesy of the social workers”.
  • Show a short, humorous video at lunchtime. My own personal favourite: “The Wrong Trousers” with Wallace and Gromit (BBC).
  • Show an educational video at lunchtime.
  • Host a tea party.
  • Offer opportunities for creative expression – paper/ crayons/ felts/ playdough
  • Free personality testing. (Take a look at these websites: www.hobbitlore.com/personality/index.php
